" Iron and Steel Impact Assessment Workshop " was concluded in Ankara within the scope of the Technical Assistance Project for the Development of the End of Waste Concept in Türkiye, which is financed by the European Union and the Republic of Türkiye and of which our General Directorate of Environmental Management is the beneficiary. Workshop was conducted from September 16-19, 2024, following the impact assessment workshops for aluminum, copper, and glass cullets.
The aim is to use the studies and results from the workshops as technical input for project studies, inform stakeholders about end-of-waste criteria and their effects, and disseminate this information to their respective sectors. Stakeholder participation in the workshops is critical for adapting the industry to sustainable development and promoting a broader behavioral change toward the concept and importance of End-of-Waste .
The opening speeches were made by Dr. Özlem YILMAZ, Branch Manager of the Industrial Waste Management of the Circular Economy and Waste Management of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, and Project Team Leader Edward Scott CROSSETT. On the first day of the workshop, project experts Laura Leon OUTES and Ronald A. ROBINSON conveyed the end-of-waste criteria for iron and steel scrap to the participants. Project Team Leader Edward Scott CROSSETT and Deputy Team Leader Oğuzhan AKINÇ made presentations on the implementation roadmap specific to Türkiye and Europe for end-of-waste criteria for iron and steel scrap.
Round table working groups were formed and workshop results were evaluated following presentations on "Impact Assessment Workshop Round Table Session Overview" with Project Expert Engin TURAN, "Environment and Human Health Impacts " with Project Expert Prof. Dr. Ülkü YETİŞ, "Market and Economic Impacts" with Project Expert Özgür AVCIOĞLU, and "Legislative and Social Impacts" with Deputy Team Leader Oğuzhan AKINÇ.
On the final day of the four-day workshop, the project team and participants evaluated the workshop outcomes and group projects, with the presence of Sabriye AYHAN, Head of the Circular Economy and Waste Management Department.
